Most water bottle caps are produced in HDPE or PP resin. HDPE offers strong chemical resistance and a firmer feel for standard screw caps, while PP is often chosen for sports and hinge style caps because it holds up better to repeated flexing without cracking.

Cap lightweighting has also become a wider industry direction, as brands look to reduce plastic usage without weakening the seal. This has pushed cap design toward thinner wall structures and revised thread geometry that still passes the same sealing and torque requirements as heavier legacy designs.
